What to wear for your Nikah

The Nikkah is the heart of a Muslim wedding, and it is often quieter than the events around it. It may take place at home, in a mosque or at a small gathering, so many brides prefer a dress that feels graceful rather than grand: fine handwork, a soft colour and a dupatta that sits comfortably over the head for the whole ceremony.

Colours and fabrics

White, ivory, cream, beige and gold are the favourites here. They photograph well in daylight and keep the focus on fine detail such as gota, pearls and tilla. Net, organza and raw silk are the most common fabrics, because they hold their shape while staying light enough to wear for hours.

Choosing a shape

A gharara or sharara feels traditional and is easy to sit in during the ceremony. A lehenga has more presence if the Nikah is also your main event. A long shirt with a dupatta suits a small family Nikah. Look for a dupatta with a border worked along its edge, as it will frame your face in the photos.

Planning ahead

You will find pieces from Sadaf Fawad Khan, Mysie by Tahira, Hussain Rehar, Ali Xeeshan and others. Stitched dresses take 7 to 10 days within Pakistan and 3 to 4 weeks worldwide. For the other events, see our Walima, Mehndi and bridal collections.

Frequently asked questions

What colour should a Nikah dress be?

White, ivory, cream, beige and gold are the most popular. There is no rule, though: some brides choose blush or a soft pastel, or a family colour that means something to them.

Is Nikah the same as Nikkah?

Yes. Both are spellings of the same word for the Islamic marriage ceremony. You will also see Nikaah.

Does a Nikah dress need a dupatta?

Most brides cover their head during the ceremony, so a dupatta is usually part of the outfit. Choose a light fabric such as net or organza, which stays in place and is comfortable to wear for a long time.

Can I wear my Nikah dress again?

Yes. Lighter pieces in ivory or gold work well for later family events, Eid or a Walima, especially if you restyle them with different jewellery.

How early should I order my Nikah dress?

Stitched dresses take 7 to 10 days within Pakistan and 3 to 4 weeks worldwide. Ordering at least 8 weeks before the date leaves time for any final adjustments.
